Yesterday I rewatched the first of Robert Downey, Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes movies. I love this movie, and the sequel because of the atmosphere. The cinematography has a lot to do with it, but so do the characterization, the dialogue, and the plot. Getting the atmosphere right is what takes a story from solid to spectacular. With Project Occipital, I’m shooting for a fun and bright atmosphere. For Novel C, to be renamed Project Ulna, the atmosphere I want is…well, all I can come up with is “blackberry”. We’ll see how that one evolves. What are some books and movies where you love the atmosphere of the story?
